An Azamazing Journey

We have just returned from a 10-night sailing on the newly refurbished Azamara Journey.  When I tell many friends that we cruised on Azamara, the most common question is “who?”.  While I admit the only reason I know about this cruise line is because I’m in the business, since cruising on Azamara, I want to shout out to everyone about this line.

20160326_151423

Azamara is a small cruise line owned by Royal Caribbean International.  Each of their two ships holds just under 700 guests.  Azamara is a mostly inclusive cruise experience with standard beverages (including alcoholic beverages) and gratuities included with your cruise fare.  Also included is an Azamazing Evening event, which is an evening shore excursion that is nothing less than spectacular.  We paid for specialty dining and shore excursions, that was pretty much it.

After taking a course on Azamara last year, I decided that we needed to try out this cruise line.  Since we had been to Europe twice in 2015, we were looking for an experience in North America.  We found the March 26 sailing to fit into our schedules and pricing was not bad.  As previous Celebrity Cruise guests, we were already members of Azamara’s Le Club Voyage which offered a discount for the March 26 date.

I can tell you that the service onboard was nothing short of spectacular.  The food was very good to excellent, with the specialty restaurants consistently excellent.  We enjoyed the best steak dinner we have ever had, on land or at sea, when we attended the French Chef’s Table.

20160326_152447

The service onboard was something that we won’t soon forget.  Servers, bar staff, managers, officers remembered you when they met you again.  And with the size of the ship, you were constantly seeing familiar faces.  This also rubbed off on the guests.  While I will admit there are times on every cruise line when you run into “entitled” folks, the vast majority of cruisers we met were friendly and welcoming.  We made several new friends onboard.  I truly think the cruise line does that to you.  We have been on other cruise lines where you just don’t interact with other guest.  You just don’t feel like it.  I think that is reflective on how you interact with the crew.  If they are outgoing and friendly, you feel like being the same.

In future blogs, I will talk about more details with this cruise, including a cost comparison to our Disney cruise last year (here’s a sneak preview – Azamara cost us considerably less when all was totaled).  We enjoyed this sailing so much that we are considering a group cruise in the future.  What do you say?  Sounds like fun, right!?

In the interest of full disclosure, I received an onboard credit of $100 for Bill and I to try both specialty restaurants, which we planned on doing anyway with our onboard credit we received from a booking promotion.  My opinions and impressions of this cruise line are independent of any perk I received.  While a travel agent rate may have been available, we booked at prevailing rates and promotions, getting a discount only because of our prior sailings with Celebrity, a benefit any other previous Celebrity cruiser would have been eligible for.

Onboard Booking Incentives

Many of my clients ask how they can get a discount on a cruise when a promotion is not available.  One risky way is to wait until a discount comes available, however this is only recommended when you don’t really care when you will be cruising, just that you want to be cruising.

The two best ways to save are to book early, as soon as possible after dates open, and to book while you are onboard.  Many cruise lines have onboard booking incentives but the key is that you have to pay that deposit before you get off the ship or the incentives go away.

With some lines like Norwegian Cruise Line, you will purchase a certificate or coupon to use on a later date. You do not name your travel agent at the time of booking with Norwegian, but with Royal Caribbean and Celebrity you do. These may or may not have a use deadline (Norwegian has a 4 year limit).

With other lines you will select your cruise date. Some will have perks for booking onboard. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity give you a potential upgrade and onboard credit. Disney offers a discount and onboard credit.

There may be limits on how many you can book onboard. Celebrity and Royal Caribbean limit you to three bookings per line. Disney limits the discounted bookings to two rooms on the same sailing, but additional rooms may be booked but only receive the onboard credit.

Most lines do offer a reduced deposit as well.

Disney Cruise Line’s changes to their onboard booking procedure last fall make them among the most stringent policies. You have 18 months from the date the quote was first produced to use the booking or lose the onboard booking incentives. You will receive $100 onboard credit on sailings of 3-6 nights and $200 onboard credit for sailings of 7 nights or more. If you initially book a 7 night sailing, you will receive a discount on the deposit requirement (normally 20%, you will pay 10%). There are also several block out dates when a discount is not available.

I think the most important thing to remember is that you should book as soon as you know you want to cruise to lock in the best pricing. If you will be onboard before that sailing, you can always check pricing when you are onboard to see if you will save more money with the incentives. If so, book a new reservation. We can get you a full refund if outside of penalties or move monies already paid to the new reservation. As long as the same category is available with cabin assignments, we can generally get your original cabin reassigned to the new reservation.

Make sure you get your quote/booking before you get off the ship as many of the offers will no longer be available when you disembark. There is nothing wrong with putting a request in the bin for new quote requests, but I do recommend taking a photo of the form so you have it handy should something happen to the request. There is no need to stand in the lines to speak to someone. If you are using a travel agent, clearly write in their name and agency name on the form. If you do book onboard, it is recommended that you let your travel agent know as soon as you can that you did a booking so they can make sure they locate it.

Oasis of the Seas – Service Review

Let me start by reiterating that service, top quality service, is first and foremost for me in everything in life.  I expect companies and employees to give 110% as the norm.  Average isn’t good enough.  I recognize that some people aren’t as particular as I am, so I’ll preface this review with “mileage may vary”.  I think this would be a great ship and great line for many people.

I have been on two previous RCCL cruises and I have to say, I was not impressed with them.  Granted bother were on smaller, older ships on shorter sailings, but I felt the food was not to my liking and the cleanliness was an issue.  I vowed to keep an open mind and try a longer cruise on a larger ship.  I had the chance to tour Oasis of the Seas in September 2011 and felt this should be the ship!
