Peru Photos – Day Five (Machu Picchu)

When many people think of going to to Peru, the first thing they think of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World.  And after much anticipated wait, it was our turn to go to Machu Picchu!  To get there, you need to take a train for a portion of the trip.  The train follows the Urubamba River to the town of Aguas Calientes.  From there we took a shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu.

Our rail car for the day.

Our littlest travelers.

We were able to see the Urabamba River where we were supposed to do our river rafting.  I’m thankful we didn’t do this!

Start of the Incan Trail.

More ruins along the way.

One of the tributaries feeding the Urabamba River.

Some local children on the way.

Very narrow, switch-back road all the way up to Machu Picchu.

Our first look at Machu Picchu.

Llamas help to keep the area clean from overgrowth.

You can tell who lived in each home based on how the walls were constructed.  You can see where one home turned into the next – the lines are not as straight and the bricks not as smooth.

The Room of the Three Windows.  Harvey explained to us how the sun coming in the windows would create and Incan Cross with it’s shadow.

Me and my roommate.

Taking a break on the way down.  On the left side is the steep stairs that we would be going down.

Another set of steep stairs!

This dog just decided to join us and quickly became one of the family.

After we left for the shuttle area, he even followed us there.  They would not let us take him home.
